PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT BADGES

Faculty may earn badges to recognize their completion and achievement of certain skills and knowledge related to teaching and learning.  These badges represent competencies for 21st century teaching at the collegiate level.  The Professional Development Badges are issued by the Center for Online and Distance Education (CODE).

Types of Professional Development Badges

BRONZE BADGE
5 hours
Technology Integration Badge I
(SILVER – 6-9 points)
Technology Integration Badge II
(GOLD –  10 or more points)
BLACKBOARD CONTENT Attend Blackboard Content webinar (one hour) Upload syllabus to Blackboard and organize content into modules; demonstrate appropriate use of discussion and assignment dropbox tools (1-2 hours)

In your Blackboard course, the following must be included: accessible documents, multimedia, and course tools. Create at least 2 assignment dropboxes.

Create 3 course discussions (in addition to Introductions ) with expectations for student participation and a rubric associated with the discussion(s) (3 hours)

GRADEBOOK Attend Blackboard Gradebook webinar (one hour) Upload syllabus Blackboard and add course assignments to the Gradebook in a course (1-2 hours) Gradebook is used for all assignments in the course and BB gradebook is used to calculate the students’ grades in a course (2-3 hours)
RUBRICS View video on Rubrics and complete quiz with an 85% or better pass rate (one hour) Upload syllabus to Blackboard and embed a rubric for at least one assignment in a course Create at least one rubric for the course and embed it in Blackboard LMS, and course feedback indicates use of rubric to calculate the students’ score on an assignment (2-3 hours)
VIRTUAL LEARNING
(BB COLLABORATE OR TEAMS)
Attend webinar on “Blackboard Collaborate” or “Dual Instruction with Teams” (one hour) Implement Virtual Meetings for at least 3 class sessions (2-3 hours) Record 3 virtual meetings, the activities show interactions between learners or between learners and the instructor (e.g. students are speaking or presenting during meeting). There is clear evidence of active learning and meeting recording is provided to students (3 hours or more)
SCREENCAST VIDEOS Attend screencast training (one hour) Record three videos/screencasts and upload to Blackboard (2-3 hours) Create and embed three or more instructor-created videos/screencasts in Blackboard (2-3 hours)

 

To earn this badge, the following must be completed:

  1. Complete Blackboard Ally training (1 hour)
  2. Meet Ally standards in one Blackboard course, these items must meet at a 90% pass rate or higher (indicator/icon is green)Create accessible syllabus
    • Upload or identify at least one accessible PDF(s) (in Blackboard or via quiz)
    • Upload or identify at least one accessible video(s) (in Blackboard or via quiz)
    • Create accessible webpage (within Blackboard)

To earn this badge, the following must be completed
(substitutions will be reviewed by CODE staff):

  1. Earn the Accessibility badge
  2. Complete “Introduction to Online Teaching” and “Advanced Online Teaching” OR complete “eFellows Online Teaching Certificate Course” (7 hours)
  3. Complete three (3) self-paced short courses (Topics include Accessibility, Retention Strategies, Online Discussions, Engaging Activities, etc (3 hours)

To earn this badge, the following must be completed
(substitutions will be reviewed by CODE staff):

  1. Earn the Accessibility badge
  2. Complete the Online Course Development training

OR

  1. Complete the “Design a Quality Online Course” workshops (3 hours)
  2. Submit one content organizer for review
  3. Pass the Alignment Quiz (85% or better on the written portion)

To earn this badge, the following must be completed
(substitutions will be reviewed by CODE staff):

  1. Earn the Online Course Development Badge
  2. Build an Online Course in the Blackboard LMS

AND

  1. Have at least one online course that meets all of the standards on the SCSU Level 1 Quality Standards Rubric

To earn this badge, the following must be completed
(substitutions will be reviewed by CODE staff):

  1. Attend three (3) professional development opportunities on active learning (e.g. workshops, live events)
  2. Complete the CODE active learning quiz successfully (85% or better on the objective portion)
  3. Explain how an active learning strategy is implemented in your course (85% or better on the written portion)

To earn this badge, the following must be completed
(substitutions will be reviewed by CODE staff):

  1. Attend three (3) professional development events/workshops
  2. Review the presentation entitled “Engaging Learners with Technology
  3. Complete the CODE virtual learning quiz (85% or better on the objective portion)
  4. Describe four of the best practices for virtual teaching and learning (85% or better on the written portion)

To earn this badge, the following must be completed
(substitutions will be reviewed by CODE staff):

  1. Attend three (3) professional development opportunities on assessment strategies (e.g. workshops, live events)

  2. Complete the CODE assessment strategies quiz successfully (85% or better on the objective portion)

  3. Explain how an assessment strategy is implemented in your course (85% or better on the written portion)

To earn this badge, the following must be completed
(substitutions will be reviewed by CODE staff):

  1. Attend three (3) professional development events/workshops on student success or how you learn/metacognition

  2. Review the Student Success/How Students Learn resource
  3. Complete the CODE quiz (85% or better on the objective portion)
  4. Describe four best practices for student success (85% or better on the written portion)

How To Request A Badge

To request a badge, complete the Professional Development Badge Request Form


T
his form is reviewed by CODE staff during the third week of each month.  Please be aware that some badges have pre-requisite badge requirements.  You will be asked to provide professional development activities for each badge that has been earned.
 
You should expect your verified badge to be issued within two weeks.
